Obesity/Prevention Initiative
An effecitve approach to the obesity and diabetes crisis requires a well-coordinated multi-sector effort. The obesity/diabetes initiatives convenes a forum that allows community staekholders to share information about their programs and opportunities to create a shared vision for health education and programming. Through a series of meetings and grants funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the initiative has gathered data through a community gap analysis and a comprehensive community health needs assessment for Lackawanna and Luzerne counties. As a result of the needs identification, the initiative is supporting obesity/diabetes prevention and education efforts in the Volunteers in Medicine Clinic, Leahy Family Health Center, and the Scranton Temple Reseidency Program in collaboration with the health care systems in both Lackawanna and Luzerne counties.
